Forbidden Empire is a 3D fantasy horror film directed by Oleg Stepchenko. It is loosely based on the classic 1835 Gothic novella Viy by Nikolai Gogol, one of Russia’s most celebrated authors. However, unlike previous adaptations (such as the famed 1967 Soviet film), this version expands the story into a full-blown international action-adventure.

Produced by Russia and Ukraine, Forbidden Empire became the highest-grossing Russian film of 2014. It stars Jason Flemyng (known for Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button ) as the English cartographer Jonathan Green.
