Urban Demons — v1.1 Beta (Nergal) Overview

Urban Demons v1.1 Beta (codename “Nergal”) is a fictional setting and toolkit for gritty urban fantasy storytelling and roleplaying. It focuses on supernatural threats that have adapted to cities: demonic factions, occult subcultures, corrupted infrastructure, and the ways ordinary urban systems hide and enable otherworldly dangers. Tone: Noir, visceral, modern occult; emphasis on atmosphere, moral ambiguity, and the city as character.

Core Concepts

The City as Organism: Cities breathe, feed, and remember. Infrastructure (sewers, subways, power grids, abandoned lots) becomes habitat and weapon for urban entities. Demons as Systems: Demons aren’t only monsters — they manifest as corrupt bureaucracies, addictive apps, predatory real-estate schemes, and viral street myths. Thin Places & Nodes: Specific urban locations (stations, tunnels, derelict towers, subway junctions) are nodes where the Veil is thin. Nodes can be exploited, sealed, or weaponized. Fractured Humanity: Protagonists are often morally grey—journalists, ex-cops, dumpster-mystic healers, social workers, gang members—people who already live in the cracks the demons inhabit. Playable/Story Elements

Factions

Council of Facades: Wealthy developers and occult real-estate cartels who bind spirits to properties. The Beneath: Tunnel-dwelling collectives and mutated homeless communities who barter in secrets. Neon Synod: Tech-savvy cultists who use AR/algorithms to amplify ritual efficacy. The Ashers: Vigilante exorcists who destroy nodes by scorched-earth tactics. Urban Demons — v1

Demons & Threat Types (examples)

Paperwork Wraiths: Entities that manifest through bureaucracy — they trap victims in endless forms, bank holds, and evictions. Signal Moths: Feed on broadband and attention; their influence spreads through social feeds and push notifications, inciting mobs or apathy. Rustback: A slow, corrosive entity that accelerates infrastructure decay—bridges, pipes, elevators fail and become predatory. Nightpeddler: Street-level bargain-maker who trades luck, memories, or time for small favors—always with a sinister clause.

Mechanics & Tools for GMs/Writers

Node System: Each thin place has Attributes (Access, Risk, Anchors). Anchors are items/rituals/people that hold a node open. Players can perform Actions to Close, Stabilize, or Exploit nodes. Corruption Meter: Tracks area influence—0 (Clean) to 5 (Fully Infected). Effects scale: minor hallucinations → structural collapse → reality bleed. Social Currency: Influence, favors, reputation, and data are as valuable as money. Use them as convertible resources for bargains with factions or entities. Investigation Beats: Sensory clues (metallic smell, static, paper fluttering), mundane traces (permit stamps, eviction notices), and social signals (sudden spikes in app usage, missing persons patterns).
