Keep the tissues ready. The Vidaai is the official departure of the bride from her parental home. As she leaves, she throws three handfuls of rice and coins over her head (towards the house) to repay her debt of food and love to her parents. She then steps into the car, and the groom’s sisters push the car away – signifying she belongs to them now.
The ritual is ugly by design. Relatives smear yellow paste onto the couple’s face, hair, and shoulders. There is no glamour here. The couple is not allowed to leave the house or shower until the paste dries. Why? Because Haldi is a ritual of protective separation. The bride and groom are considered vulnerable—stuck between their childhood home and their future home. The turmeric acts as a spiritual firewall, warding off the "evil eye" (jealousy) from those who didn't make the guest list. It is the process of pickling the soul for the long journey ahead.
